Let's Talk About Anxiety and Distance Reiki — Because This Combination Works
By Terry · Black Lion Botanicals · Mérida, Yucatán, México
Anxiety is sneaky.
It doesn't always show up as panic. Sometimes it's the tight chest that won't loosen. The thoughts that start at two in the morning and won't stop. The low hum of dread you can't point to a source for. The feeling that you're holding something heavy and you've been holding it so long you forgot it wasn't yours to carry.
I work with anxiety more than any other single condition in my reiki practice. And the thing I want you to know — the thing I wish somebody had told me before I found energy work — is that anxiety is not just a mental health issue. It lives in the body. It has an energetic signature. And it can be reached and shifted in ways that no amount of positive thinking or deep breathing fully addresses.
Distance reiki is one of the most powerful tools I have for this. And yes — it works just as well from across the room, across the country, or across the ocean. That is not a sales pitch. That is five years of client sessions and a whole lot of evidence.
Let me tell you how.
First — What Is Distance Reiki, Exactly?
Reiki is energy work. The premise is simple: the body has an energy field, that field can become congested or depleted, and a trained practitioner can help move and restore that energy. What most people don't realize is that this does not require physical proximity.
At Level 2 Reiki, practitioners are attuned to the distance symbol — Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen, which translates roughly as "the light in me reaches the light in you." It bridges space and time. I settle in, hold focused intention, connect with your energy field, and the session unfolds exactly as it would if you were on a table in front of me.
Energy is not diminished by distance. This is consistent with quantum physics — not mysticism, not wishful thinking. And the outcomes speak for themselves.
What's Actually Happening With Anxiety in the Energy Body
When I work with someone who is carrying anxiety, I almost always find the same energetic pattern: congestion in the upper chest and throat. A solar plexus that is either overworking or has gone quiet. A nervous system that has been running on high alert for so long that it has genuinely forgotten what regulation feels like.
Anxiety is not just a thought problem. It is a body problem. The thoughts and the physical sensations feed each other in a loop — tight chest triggers worry, worry triggers tight chest — and that loop can be very hard to interrupt from inside your own mind.
Reiki interrupts it from a different angle entirely.
Five Ways Distance Reiki Specifically Addresses Anxiety
1. It regulates the nervous system directly.
Not by telling you to breathe differently. Not by asking you to think positive. By working directly on the energetic patterns that keep the nervous system stuck in alert. I have had clients fall asleep during sessions — not because they were tired, but because their system finally felt safe enough to let go. One client reached out during an active migraine, deeply anxious, not even fully sure why she was contacting me. We did a session right then. She was asleep before it ended and woke up with both the migraine and the accompanying anxiety gone.
2. It clears what's underneath the anxiety.
Anxiety often has something living underneath it — grief, old fear, suppressed anger, an experience the body hasn't finished processing. The mind can keep a tight lid on those things. The energy body cannot. Distance reiki reaches the deeper layers and begins to move what's been stuck there, sometimes for years. I have watched clients cry during sessions without knowing why — the good kind of crying, the kind that feels like something releasing rather than something breaking.
3. It addresses the physical symptoms, not just the emotional ones.
The tight chest. The tension headaches. The stomach that never fully unclenches. The fatigue that sleep doesn't fix. These are not separate from anxiety — they are anxiety, expressed in the body. Energy work addresses them at the source rather than managing the symptoms downstream. Clients have reported relief from chronic physical tension, PMS that was tangled up with emotional stress, and the kind of bone-deep fatigue that comes from carrying worry for too long.
4. It works on the root, not just the moment.
A lot of anxiety management is about coping — getting through the hard moment. Reiki is interested in why the hard moments keep coming. What is the energetic pattern that keeps re-creating the experience of overwhelm? Where in the body is the fear living? That deeper work is what creates lasting change rather than just relief.
5. You receive it in your own space — which matters more than you'd think.
Here is something I have noticed that I don't say enough: some clients go deeper in a distance session than they do in person. When you are physically in a room with another person, some part of you is still performing okay. In your own home, in your own bed, with nobody watching — the body feels what it actually feels. The release that was waiting just under the surface finally has room to come through. Your own space is its own kind of medicine.
What the Research Says
I don't need science to validate my experience. But I know some of you do, and that is completely fair.
A study of NHS frontline healthcare workers receiving distance reiki showed statistically significant improvements in stress, anxiety, pain, and sleep. Reiki is currently offered as complementary care in over 800 hospitals in the United States. We can measure the outcomes consistently even while the full mechanism is still being studied.
It works. We can see that it works. The how is still catching up.
A Note on Low Self-Esteem and Anxiety
These two travel together more often than people realize.
Low self-esteem doesn't always look like low self-esteem. It looks like staying in situations that are slowly diminishing you. It looks like not finishing things you start. It looks like the inner voice that is not kind, the one you wouldn't let anyone talk to someone you love that way — but you tolerate it from yourself.
Energetically, this pattern almost always sits in the solar plexus — the seat of personal power and identity. When that center is depleted, anxiety fills the space. And when the solar plexus begins to clear and strengthen, the anxiety often shifts along with it.
I had a client who came to me presenting with anxiety. We worked together over several sessions. A few weeks after our work together she told me she had applied for something she'd been talking herself out of for two years. She got it. She told me the sessions didn't give her confidence — they removed whatever was sitting on top of it.
That is the work.
What a Distance Session With Me Actually Looks Like
You book a session. I send you simple instructions — lie down somewhere comfortable, stay off your phone, be as still as you can. You don't have to believe anything specific. Openness is enough. Skepticism is welcome.
While you rest, I work. I connect with your energy field, move through it the same way I would in person, and focus on what comes up. Afterward, I send you my notes on what I observed and where I worked. You share what you experienced. Often those two accounts reflect each other in ways that are quietly remarkable.
Sometimes the shift is immediate. Sometimes it happens in the days after, as the body integrates. Either way, something moves.
Ready to Try It?
If you've been carrying anxiety for a while — if you've tried the apps and the breathing exercises and the therapy and something still isn't shifting — distance reiki might be the thing you haven't tried yet.
You don't have to be local. You don't have to be a believer. You just have to be willing.
